December22200920:06
Ukraine is in talks with Russia to raise tariffs for the transit of Russian oil, Pres Yushchenko’s aide for energy security Bohdan Sokolovsky told journalists in Kyiv Dec. 22.The talks are expected to be completed by the end of 2009, Sokolovsky says. However, the official would not elaborate on the size of the new transit tariff, citing a commercial secret.
Meanwhile, Naftohaz Ukrayiny and Russia Gazprom have agreed to postpone payments for gas by Ukraine till January 11 due to the week-long Christmas and New Year holidays.
Under the Jan. 19, 2009 contract with Russia, Ukraine is to pay for its monthly gas supplies by the 7th of the subsequent month. Failing this, Ukraine will have to make advance payments for gas.
NU chairman Oleh Dubyna and Gazprom chairman Aleksei Miller also discussed shipments of gas to and via Ukraine in Q1 of 2010.
Striking a warning note, Bohdan Sokolovsky says Gazprom hasn’t revoked its Jan. 16, 2009 lawsuit to NU filed with the Stockholm Arbitration Court in the wake of the gas war in late 2008 – early 2009.
There is no information that Gazprom has recalled its lawsuit about the conflict for which Russia stands to blame, Sokolovsky says.
In its lawsuit, Gazprom claimed that Ukraine not only failed to meet its commitments to pump gas via Ukraine but also siphoned off the Russian gas.
