Tymoshenko to give more muscle to police, if elected president

Addressing a celebration event on the Day of Police on Friday, Dec. 18 in Kyiv, Premier Yulia Tymoshenko said she will break the monopoly of the Prosecutor’s General Office to present high-profile criminal cases to court and vest the police with similar powers, Interfax-Ukraine reports. At present, the police in Ukraine can investigate and take to court only petty official crimes. With high-profile crimes committed by officials, the police can be engaged only at the initial stages of the investigation.

Many such cases have been shelved by the prosecution, notably the journalist Gongadze case. The current general prosecutor was appointed by Pres Yushchenko and is widely believed to be his insider.
Tymoshenko reminded that her party in Verkhovna Rada had tabled a bill giving more muscle to the police.

“The agency that starts the investigation must be able to bring it to court. The prosecution will be able to present their arguments in court,” she added.
