In the past 6 months, the Security Service of Ukraine has exposed 7 spies among diplomats, SBU Director Valentyn Nalyvajchenko told The Day.“Ukraine has state-of-the-art technologies and many secrets which tempt foreign special services to enroll Ukrainians. Foreign agents are rather active in Ukraine in their efforts to rope in our citizens and lay their hands on the know-how. Seven diplomats have been charged with spying over the past 6 months alone. SBU is conducting investigation into 3 criminal cases involving foreigners and Ukrainians. In the remaining 4 cases, SBU managed to forestall theft of classified information, and the Ukrainians involved will face only administrative punishment.
Nalyvajchenko cited a case of a Russian spy who was charged with obtaining defense industry secrets for a Chinese special service.
Generally speaking, special services do not indicate from which country the exposed spies come. We complete our work by sending protests via the foreign ministry or directly if we can summon a representative of a special service involved in espionage in Ukraine. In some cases, we deport unwelcome aliens from Ukraine, Nalyvajchenko said.
