Rada derails changes to presidential election law
December03200910:47
Dec. 2, Verkhovna Rada refused to adopt amendments to the presidential election law in the second reading. In all, lawmakers rejected the proposed 243 amendments to the law. According to our Kyiv correspondent, politicians say this won’t disrupt the forthcoming election. Andry Parybij (Our Ukraine) explains that the election will be held under the law authored by BYT and Party of Regions. The provisions of the BYT-PR law that were rendered illegal by the Constitutional Court will not be valid, he went on.
Oleksandr Yefremov (PR) echoes Parubij by saying that “nothing bad has happened. We have the law on the presidential election which we adopted. Moreover, we have overridden Yushchenko’s veto on the law. With the exception of the 5 articles rendered illegal by the CC, the law can be applied and we can have a democratic election.”
