To renovate his country residence, Yanukovych spent millions of public money

Presidential candidate and leader of the Regions party Viktor Yanukovych spent millions of public money to renovate his residence when he was premier, Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko told journalists in Kryvy Rih Nov. 24, commenting on Yanukovych’s campaign pledge to fight corruption after his victory on Jan. 17, 2010.“As usual, Viktor Yanukovych is given to original and sudden ways. He should be the first to blow the whistle on corruption. But before becoming president, Viktor Yanukovych has to deal with his own corruption,” the minister said.
Lutsenko then specified he meant Yanukovych’s country estate home, a former government residence, which he bought after a chain of dubious deals when he was premier. The 600-square-meter residence sits on a 140-hectare lot of land.
“Let me also tell you that Yanukovych had a dam built and a nearby bay cleaned in 2007 by a private construction company – at UAH2,897,000 or 62% of the total amount of funding allotted in the budget for similar works for the whole of Ukraine,” Lutsenko went on.
In addition, the roads in the area were repaired in 2007 at UAH2.3 million. A special 8.5-km road was built directly to Viktor Yanukovych porch – for another UAH25 million of public money. This road, used only by Yanukovych, is now maintained by the state-run Ukravtodor company at UAH250,000 annually
“I can also tell you that the valuable body of our presidential candidate and fighter with corruption Viktor Yanukovych is warmed by natural gas which is sold only to industrial companies – because it is cheaper. Viktor Yanukovych is a weird fighter with corruption,” the minister summed up.
Recall that on Aug. 26 the cabinet passed a resolution to return Yanukovych country house to state property. Since Viktor Yanukovych refused to give up the property point-blank, the cabinet ordered the Justice Ministry to file a lawsuit against the former premier.
