Expert accuses authorities of sowing panic over swine flue outbreak

Addressing journalists in Kyiv Nov. 4, director of Sofia think tank Andrij Yermolayev said he was astonished and alarmed by the way the authorities are handling the flue outbreak, our Kyiv correspondent reports.Yermolayev said many events surrounding the epidemic were orchestrated. The authorities have deliberately fueled tensions in society. He even suspects that the authorities had wasted time for 2 weeks until the outbreak climax had come. The authorities cannot even now come to any decision about the nature of the infection, he said.
Since the H1N1 virus has been known for a year, the helplessness of the authorities looks strange and raises suspicions of purposeful panic-building, the expert claims.
He doubts Yushchenko will use the epidemic to declare the state of emergency in Ukraine. If Yushchenko does this, it will be a manifestation of his sad fears of losing the power as well as his slipping control of the country. The state of emergency won’t leave Yushchenko in office, save for a couple of months, Yermolayev says.0
For his part, Penta think tank director Volodymyr Fesenko says the flue outbreak won’t destabilize political campaigning. However, it can affect the approval ratings of Yulia Tymoshenko, Viktor Yanukovych and Viktor Yushchenko.
Meanwhile, according to the latest reports at the close of Nov. 4, the number of flue victims in Ukraine has grown to 93.
The toll as reported in the morning of Nov. 4 was 81, with 71 on Tuesday.
