Yushchenko blocks gas payments to Russia, Tymoshenko complains to Putin

Following his telephone conversation with Premier Tymoshenko, Russia Premier Vladimir Putin says Ukraine has problems with payments for October deliveries of the Russian gas, Interfax-Ukraine reports Oct. 30.

“Sadly, it looks as if we will again have difficulties regarding payments for our gas by Ukraine,” Putin said.

“According to what the Ukrainian premier told me, Yushchenko obstructs normal cooperation of the Ukrainian cabinet with the country’s Central bank which has gold and currency reserves. The bank blocs transfer of payments to Russia,” Putin explained.

According to the IMF, Ukrainian has sufficient gold and currency reserves, Putin observed.

“Ukraine’s gold and currency reserves amount to $27-28 billion, with, according to the IMF, the lower level needed to ensure the hryvnia stability and foreign trade payments being at $12 billion,” Putin went on.

The IMF considers it proper and correct if Ukraine pays for its gas deliveries with its reserves, Putin said.

The Russian premier reminded that Russia has paid in advance for the transit of its gas via Ukraine till the end of Q1 in 2010, or about $2.5 billion.

“What is to be done?” Putin then asked.

Earlier, Putin has repeatedly warned Yulia Tymoshenko that Ukraine is to strictly adhere to its contractual obligations.

    • This, if true, is clearly an abuse and misuse of presidential authority. It would appear that Yushchenko is engaged in a campaign of economic terrorism designed to weaken Ukraine's economy and stir up conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the lead-up to the 2010 presidential election.
Clearly he is not suited to remain Ukraine's head of state.
Anther reason why Yushchenko must be removed from office before he can cause more harm and damage to Ukraine.
