According to the First Lady, the Communist regime had been consistently active destroying the Ukrainian church. Having destroyed age-long belief in Christ, the Communists proposed their own idols instead. The culture and faith of Ukrainians was deformed and are in need of renovation, K. Yushchenko said.

One can see statutes of Communist leaders, Lenin among them, in many cities and towns in Eastern and Central Ukraine. It is absolutely cynical that such monuments are located near churches. Consequently, believers and their priests are entitled to demand that the monuments be pulled down, she said.

“Unless Ukrainians get rid of these idols, they cannot count on God’s blessing and become prosperous,” Kateryna Yushchenko concluded.

• • Perhaps she has some sugestions for replacements? I am an American living here. I understand she was also at one time an American. My point is. I travle to every city I can In the Ukraine. I have myself photographed posing next to every Lenin monument there is. Along with every other monument in this unbelievable historic country. The castles, tanks, aircraft, burial mounds, churches, monestarys. All the things that make the Ukraine the interesting place it is. To remove this man from the Ukraine is to deny her country their pride. I am 55 yrs old. As a child living in florida I was trained weekly to, at the sound of the siren in our school, find cover under my school desk. This drill was to save me from the USSR missle attack from Cuba. Ha.. My point is. A President with a nation looking for leadership should look to the past and promote the things that made them great instead of deamonising everything their parents and grandparents stood for. Show some friggin respect Mr. President.
