Yushchenko’s reaction to Medvedev’s statement will be balanced and reserved

The reaction of Pres Yushchenko to his Russian counterpart statement will be balanced and reserved, political expert Vadym Karasyov told the ZIK correspondent in Kyiv Aug. 11.Karasyov says the reaction will be balanced and not harsh, as it deals with Ukraine’s state and national interests and the right of Ukraine to set its own foreign policy course regardless of Moscow, Brussels or Warsaw.
“It will be an official and weighted statement tailored to diplomatic standards. Our relations are too important to comment on them by issuing loud declarations,” Karasyov said.
Ukraine will not succumb to any provocations. Medvedev’s statement on Russia-Ukraine relations is aimed to sow discord in Ukraine, to electrify Ukraine’s presidential campaign, to drive a wedge between the two major camps and make the campaign look like a war. We will never let it happen, Karasyov said.
In his opinion, declarations that Russia is preparing to start a war with Ukraine are groundless. “They are too primitive. Why should they think of starting a war if they have many sympathizers among Ukraine politicians and ordinary Ukrainians? They have put their money on the presidential election. They want to ensure the election of a puppet politician loyal to Moscow
Karasyov says Medvedev’s statement is not linked to the extension of a gas credit by the EU to Ukraine. However, he continues, the credit may have been the last straw provoking his attack. Ukraine began to irk Russia in 2004 when pro-Western politicians came to power. Russia today is a counterrevolutionary state eager to retain the CIS space in its former condition 20 years back.
The expert expects international reaction to Medvedev’s statement. Primarily, it will be the United States, a country that emerged from a revolution and espouses liberal democratic values and is committed to independence of former USSR republics. The EU reaction will be mild, he forecast.
“Much will depend, however, on the reaction of Ukraine politicians and whether they will catch the virus of a rift thrown by Russia or demonstrate at least some political maturity. They should realize that at stake are the interests of Ukraine, not those of their political parties or themselves,” Karasyov concluded.

America like Russia will always look after their perceived interests first and foremost. Even the USA has written off Yushchenko as a serious player in the next Presidential election and have acknowledged that Yushchenko will not win a second term of office. As clearly stated in last weeks forum debate on Ukraine.
