50% of businesses operate in grey economy and won’t pay taxes despite 2-year ban on checks, says president of Lviv oblast employers association

Association president Zenovy Bermez says the cabinet’s program to help SMBs is too soft. “The cabinet’s ban on checks is a positive measure, but there is no knowing if it will help SMBs,” he says.Bermez is in favor of a more radical reform, adding that the causes forcing businessmen to operate in the shadows, not the checks procedures, should be tackled.
The authorities tend to resort to semi-measures, never addressing global causes of our problems, he continues. Of course, the ban on checks will be hailed by legal businesses. But the ban won’t make any difference for grey economy businesses that will continue to skip paying taxes. Reforms should be aimed at bringing them out of the shadows, the official says.
Bermez also told that a meeting with the cabinet is scheduled for next Monday. “I will try to speak up at the meeting and make my case. I don’t know if my proposals will fall on willing ears,” he says. .
Our problems are much more deep, and the ban on checks won’t help businesses a lot. Let’s live and see. It’s a sensible step, but we’ll have to see its results,” Bermez stressed.
“If had my way, I would take much more radical steps,” he concluded.
