Judges, police investigators and prosecutors will get a life sentence for taking a $10,000 bribe. Officials will do 15 years in jail for the same bribe. The law was passed by 364 lawmakers May 20.Perpetrators indicted on the strength of this law will not have the right to appeal for amnesty.
In a related move to beat down rampant corruption, the cabinet imposed a moratorium till the end of 2010 on checks of businesses by tax and customs inspectors
Only two kinds of checks will remain, the one following a complaint, and the other following a request for a check.
Businesses will request checks by tax inspectors as it is mandatory for repaying a VAT rebate.
In another resolution, the cabinet banned sanctions imposed on businesses after checks. Now tax inspectors will only demand that businesses remove causes of tax laws violations within 30 days.
