Incident in Frankfurt is an attempt to bring to heel Interior Minister Lutsenko, People’s Self-Defense says

Instead of echoing the opposition calls for resignation of Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko in the wake of an alleged incident in Frankfurt as reported by a German tabloid, it is worth to think about the goals pursued by these self-appointed defenders of morality, a member of People’s Self-Defense faction in VR, Yury Hrymchak said in his press release May 6.

No one but Lutsenko and members of the Ukrainian delegation can know the details of the incident at Frankfurt’s airport, the lawmaker said. There were no comments by Ukraine foreign ministry.

Lutsenko was traveling to South Korea for talks due May 5-8. He is expected back in Kyiv May 8.

To use a story from a German tabloid as conclusive evidence is the same as looking for credible information, relying on graffiti. The opposition is bursting to find compromising materials against the interior minister, Yury Hrymchak continued.

The purpose of such baseless accusations is to rock the boat and destroy a fragile balance existing in VR, the lawmaker claimed.

“All the demands for immediate resignation of Minister Lutsenko should be viewed as cheap electioneering of those politicians who are keen to imitate their political activity and do not care about the image of Ukraine,” the lawmaker added.

Meanwhile, Pres Yushchenko instructed Premier Tymoshenko to investigate the incident, giving her 2 days, the president’s press service said May. 6.

The incumbent also ordered deputy Foreign Minister V. Handogy to request official information from Germany’s embassy in Kyiv.

Recall that May 6 proua.com, referring to The Bild, reported an incident in the Frankfurt airport in which Ukraine interior minister was detained by German police.

However, Lutsenko’s press secretary Viktoria Belova dismissed as untrue the allegations that the minister was drunk and his son, accompanying him, was hand-cuffed.

Commenting on the alleged incident, pro-Yushchenko’s Yedyny Tsentr group in VR leader, Ihor Kryl, warned that, unless Lutsenko resigns voluntarily, his group will initiate his resignation in Verkhovna Rada.

Kril recalled the incident involving Japan’s finance minister who had to resign merely on suspicions of being tipsy at his press conference. “In other countries officials are aware that a minister is a public figure whose actions affect the country’s image,” Kril said.
