Rusyns in Mukacheve declare Podkarpatska Rus republic

A new republic, Podkarpatska Rus, was declared by the Rusyns at their European Congress in Mukacheve Oct. 25, the congress co-head, Father Dymytrij Sydor told ZIK.The congress was attended by 109 deputies. A guest from the Czech republic gave the congress its international status. The Rusyns signed the act of declaration of Rusyn statehood and announced the creation of their republic in the status of Nov. 22, 1938 when the republic was first declared as well as elected the republic’s executive.
Congress participants told ZIK they will appeal to the Zakarpatya oblast council to award autonomy to the republic and declare the territory of the oblast an autonomous republic.

March 7, 2007, Zakarpatya oblast council recognized the Rusyns as a separate ethnic minority and put it on the list of ethnic minorities residing in the oblast, with 70 deputies supporting the motion, 2 against and 2 abstaining. According to the 2001 census, 10,000 residents of the oblast identified themselves as Rusyns.
