July 25, members of the Russian Youth Brotherhood, wearing Red Army caps with red stars, gathered in downtown Lviv near the city municipal hall. Despite rainy weather, they were handing out leaflets on the occasion of the city’s liberation from the Nazis on July 27, 1944.“The event is our answer to those who promote Fascism in Lviv,” head of RYB Oleg Kartsev said, adding that leaflets titled “SS Halychyna are our heroes” had been disseminated in some areas of Lviv on the eve. We will react swiftly to any such initiatives, the RYB head stressed.
As the event started, municipal guards intended to ban RYB members to disseminate their leaflets near the building entrance. However, on learning that the even was not political and coordinated with the Halytsky rayon police, the guards withdrew. Still, the guards banned RYB to place their posters inside the municipal building, saying only mayor’s office information was allowed there.
The reaction of Lviv residents was mixed. Two RYB members, Katya and Natalya, both of them students and wearing caps with red stars and T-shirts with the words “I remember and I am proud,” were jeered by many passers-by. One Svoboda city council deputy even called them stinking “moskals” and damn occupants, threatening to use force against RYB members. When challenged that there is a democracy in Lviv, he answered “Go to hell!”
Several elderly ladies, definitely the victims of the Communist terror, also criticized the BYB girls, saying “Imagine me appearing in Moscow with my Ukrainian emblems – “moskal”police would be quick to kick my ass. Other by-standers called the girls Moscow prostitutes.
But RYB members refused to join in the conversation. The number of leaflets handed out to Lviv residents was 2,000.
