Russia wants NATO to brush off Georgia and Ukraine
July15200820:10
Russia continues to insist that NATO deny entry in the alliance to Ukraine and Georgia. This flows from its foreign policy concept recently approved by Pres Medvedev.According to The Ukrayinska Pravda, “Russia takes a negative view of NATO eastward expansion, notably regarding Ukraine and Georgia,” the concept runs.
Russia is similarly opposed to the deployment of NATO infrastructure at its doorstep, saying it will violate the mutual safety principle, lead to new divisive trends in Europe and contradict the task of raising effective cooperation between Russia and NATO to meet the arising challenges.
“Russia will base its relations with NATO on the degree of NATO preparedness to maintain equal partnership, comply with the principles and acts of international law, implementation by all its members of the obligation not to ensure their safety at Russia’s expense undertaken within the Russia-NATO Council,” the new Russian concept runs.
