If Yushchenko fails to make United Center lawmakers vote for coalition, he will reap early presidential election, VR lawmaker Denkovych warns

Pres Yushchenko must resolve the present political stalemate in VR by forcing United Center deputies to vote for coalition and government decisions. If Yushchenko fails in this mission, he will face early parliamentary and presidential elections, VR BYUT lawmaker Ivan Denkovych warned, speaking in a press conference in Lviv July 15.

It was 11 defiant NUNS members who derailed the government draft 2008 budget. Had Yushchenko wished, those 11 would have voted for the draft, as Yushchenko knows how to make them toe the line. Had the draft been approved, the 30 billion hryvnias in extra budgetary revenue would have been used to benefit the nation. It is understandable when the opposition is against the draft, it is strange that NUNS lawmakers do not vote for it, Denkovych added.

Simultaneously, the lawmaker has assured once again that the coalition will continue as the bulk of Our Ukraine supports the government. “We will carry on till September and there will be no snap elections in September as it is common knowledge that only BYUT can benefit from it. Meanwhile, by initiating a vote of no confidence in the cabinet, the Party of Regions shot itself in the foot. It was either unprepared for the vote or failed to get the necessary support from other parties. Consequently, PoR’s and Viktor Baloha’s hopes of sacking the cabinet flopped,” Ivan Denkovych stressed.

Both cabinet-proposed and president-proposed draft budgets got failing grades from deputies July 11, with the first supported by 216 votes and the other by 58. The cabinet’s draft was rejected by PoR, Communists and the Lytvyn bloc. Of the breakaway NUNS group 3 did not vote, 3 abstained and 5 were absent.
