July 8, Lviv oblast council lawmakers urged the president and prosecutor general to prevent the installation in Luhansk of a monument to the victims of OUN-UPA atrocities. Instead, they propose to build monuments to the victims of communist terror in all oblast capitals, ZIK reports. The motion to ban the hypocritical monuments in Donbas was made by Rostyslav Novozhenets.
The appeals to Pres Yushchenko and Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko runs: “Lviv oblast community has met with a wide concern the news of the coming opening of a monument to the victims of OUN-UPA atrocities in Svatovo, Luhansk oblast and the construction of a smiliar monument in Luhansk. Such decisions indicate lack of knowledge about the Ukrainian history, as UPA was formed in 1942 and fought against the Germans. Thousands of UPA fighters died in German concentrations camps or were killed in action.
After the defeat of Germany, UPA continued its fight against the Communists. OUN and UPA fought for independent Ukraine and against Soviet domination. UPA and OUN members were persecuted and destroyed by the Soviets. It is thanks to UPA/OUN dedication and sacrifices that we have a sovereign Ukraine.
We demand the installation of monuments in every oblast capital city to commemorate the victims of Communist oppression which killed millions of Ukrainians.
We demand legal assessment of the decisions by Svatovo and Luhansk councils, include in school programs the materials about the liberation struggle of Ukrainians in the 30s-50s of the past century.”

Is this a nation that respects the right and value of free speech. What is next a ban on monuments commemorating victims of repression, fascist or the holocaust.
