Ternopil residents like NATO more than their brethren in Lviv or Ivano-Frankivsk

July08200818:36

Almost 70% of Ternopil residents would back Ukraine’s accession to the alliance was the referendum held now. This is the highest rate of support for NATO among Western Ukraine major regions Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Rivne and Lutsk, a poll by Sotsinform, a Ukrainian center for testing public opinion, says.

According to Sotsinform director Olexy Antypovych, public opinion has been gauged on many issues. As regards Ternopil, 41.3% of residents believe the situation in the city has not changed since Roman Zastavny became mayor, with 28.7% saying it has changed for the better and 25.9% that it has changed for the worse. The residents’ major complaints were about bad roads, unemployment levels, high utility tariffs, etc. These complaints are common for all other cities we polled, O. Antypovych notes.

Of the city officials, Ternopil residents spoke most highly about the governor and oblast council head, with mayor receiving only 33.8% of positive assessments.

If parliamentary elections were held now, BYUT would get 45.8% of the vote, Svoboda – 9%, with 14.5% voting against all and 6.5% not voting at all. “This is more than in the past years. People are becoming more and more discouraged,” O. Antypovych says.

As regards an early presidential election, the incumbent Viktor Yushchenko takes the third position with 8.7%, after Yulia Tymoshenko with 42% and Arseny Yatseniuk with 10.2%.

32% of Ternopil residents have trust in Yushchenko, against Tymoshenko’s 67.2%

and Yatseniuk’s 53.5%.

Yushchenko takes the most blame for the present political crisis in Ukraine, with 38.2%, followed by Viktor Yanukovych with 15.2%, Viktor Baloha with 6.8% and Tymoshenko with 4%.

Simultaneously, 79.2% of Ternopil residents are opposed to snap elections, with 16.3 % supporting the idea.

    • This poll confirms what all other polls ahve been stating. Yushchenko is in an unwinnable position come next presidnetial election. Not even time could repair the damage he has caused to his standing.
Teronopil was considered to be one of Yushchenko's supporting oblats.
Ukraine must look to finding a more suitable and appropaite person to become Ukraine'snext head of state.
Failing that the only other option is to adopt constitutional change and a full parliamentary democracy.
