President kow-towing to Akhmetov and Regions in exchange for their backing for his second presidential bid

“Yushchenko has by far more muscle than [former President] Kuchma. It amounts to the usurpation of power. Europe has no way to influence Yushchenko. The president is kow-towing to Akhmetov and Party of Regions in exchange for their backing in Eastern Ukraine for his second presidential bid,” BYUT lawmaker Dmytro Shlemko told his voters in Ivano-Frankivsk June 24.It is no surprise, the lawmaker said, that [Supreme Court Chief Justice] Onopenko was speaking about the ongoing coup, accusing the incumbent of trying to control the courts.
The president has vetoed all anti-inflationary bills by the Tymoshenko cabinet. He was not even happy with the stunning $6 billion in excess budget revenues collected by the cabinet in the wake of its campaign to bring the economy out of the shadows.
Asked about the cabinet’s powers, the lawmaker said that in 2004 BYUT joined forces with the Regions to endorse the law on the cabinet that clipped the president’s wings. This year, the president railroaded another law which gave him a lot more muscle. As a result, the present cabinet has little clout left and takes orders from everyone, including the National Defense and Security Council.
