In the course of the second leg of NATO ambassadors visit to Lviv, they met with the students and faculty of the Lviv Polytechnic. Western diplomats stressed the need of a wide public debate in Ukraine on MAP. They also said Russia BSF is no impediment on Ukraine’s road to NATO.As stressed by Slovenia’s amb to NATO, Bozho Cezar, a 60% support for accession to NATO, not the 100%, is needed, when the campaign to raise NATO awareness can be continued after joining the alliance. Simultaneously, the amb said, NATO opponents must have the same amount of TV and radio airtime to expound their view as NATO supporters. A wide public debate is needed in your society, and no one else can do it for you, he advised.
NATO expects from Ukraine to accommodate and share the alliances’ values, France’s Ambassador Richard Duke said. “Accession is a long-term commitment, and you must work toward a consensus. We will assist you on your road to NATO,’ he pledged.
NATO ambs spoke about the need to debunk cold-war myths and stereotypes regarding NATO. The alliance is not only a military union, it is also an organization that consults on security. “Our motto is “One for all and all for one.” If a NATO member is encountered with a threat, we will defend our member country,” he explained. He also stressed NATO is constantly undergoing reforms.
Summing up the meeting, Greece Ambassador to NATO Teri Stomatopulos stressed that NATO cannot stabilize the political situation in Ukraine, although it can offer advice on how to do it. As one of the NATO demands is that the funding of armed forced should be kept at NATO levels, he warned it may cost much for Ukraine to maintain its armed forced on a par with other NATO members. “But there is a bright side to it: being under NATO’s umbrella, Ukraine will be able to downsize its army and channel the money to ensure better quality of its army. Membership in NATO is security, more foreign investment, democratic reforms and the rule of law,” the diplomat summed up.
