Yushchenko set to stop Russia’s encroachments on Crimea

May16200818:06

Pres Yushchenko demands measures to convince Russia that Crimea belongs to Ukraine. Yushchenko said this, addressing a session of the National Defense and Security Council May 16, The Ukrayinska Pravda reports.

The NDSC has to analyze its earlier decisions on Crimea, the incumbent said. “Once and for all, we will do what it takes to prove that Crimea is part of Ukraine,” the president warned.

The ongoing shadow distribution of communal land plays havoc with Crimea, the president said. “What is going on in Kyiv is equally appalling. Highly placed officials and politicians, shielded by their mandates are snatching parts of Kyiv land to the accompaniment of their loud declarations about democracy, freedom of expression and commitment to their people,” Yushchenko said angrily.

The May 16 NDSC session also looked into the status of Ukraine as a naval power. “Due to irresponsible policy, we have lost the whole fleet, and Ukraine is on the point of losing its naval country status,” he added.

Other items of the council‘s agenda were the handling by the authorities of environmental and natural calamities. Yushchenko lashed out at the ministry for emergencies for not buying domestically-made fire engines.

As part of preparations for Euro-2012, the council also analyzed the problem of airports and the resumption of funding for State Property Fund.
