Conflict around Euro-2012 football championship in Lviv gains momentum

Head of Lviv Oblast council Myroslav Senyk has demanded performance reports from oblast Governor Olijnyk and city Mayor Sadovyj at Feb. 19 council session on preparations for Euro-2012 finals to be held in Lviv, ZIK reports citing reliable sources in the oblast council. Simultaneously, M. Senyk said Jan. 23 that he is stepping down from the championship’s organizing committee due to its inaction. “I took the decision to resign from the OC because, unfortunately, it exists only on paper,” he said.The official expressed concern over the fact that only two companies are participating in a tender to build a stadium in Lviv.
At the same time, M. Senyk said he will monitor preparations for Euro-2012.

The work group including M. Senyk, Governor Olijnyk and Mayor Sadovyj to prepare for the football tournament in Lviv was set up on April 24, 2007.
Airing the city’s priorities then, Governor Olijnyk said Euro 100 million will be needed to build a stadium and an airport, while another Euro 300-400 mn to build new roads, three new border-crossing points and modernize one border-crossing point.
Construction of 20 new hotels, one of which a 5-star hotel, is also on the agenda as well as renovation of the city’s monuments.
