The governor is convinced that journalists could have done better by reporting on multi-billion illegal land sales schemes addressed by the session of the National Defense and Security Council, the scene of the fistfight, rather than making the incident the top news. "All this is a banal smokescreen to cover up illegal land sales," he said.

According to Olijnyk who attended the NDSC session, he did not witness the fight as at the moment he was talking to the president outside the hall.
