Under the draft, persons who took part in political, guerilla, underground and combat activities for the freedom and independence of Ukraine in 20s-90s of the 20th century as part of the Ukrainian Military Organization (UVO), Karpatska Sich, OUN, UPA, Ukrainian Main Liberation Army, as well as persons who assisted these organizations shall be viewed as war veterans.
The status of war veterans can be also awarded to the persons who acted independently or as part of other organizations to ensure Ukraine’s independence. The list of such activities and organizations will be approved by the cabinet.
In line with the draft, the state shall undertake commitments for the social security of combatants. Importantly, OUN-UPA veterans will be equated in rights with WWII veterans. Local government can render extra material and financial assistance to war veterans.
After the bill becomes law, the cabinet has 6 months to come up with its proposals on what state guarantees should be given to war veterans.
The veterans in the war for Ukrainian independence will be issued appropriate identity cards.
